(Sept. 15, 2003) - Covered in mud, wet and cold, the men and women who have been selected but not yet promoted to Chief Petty Officer, huddle together to keep warm after completing an obstacle course called the ÒSeven SeasÓ aboard Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tenn. Where other services merely sew on another stripe when promoted from the E-6 to E-7 pay grade and show up to work the next day, Chief selecteeÕs across the Navy voluntarily submit to five weeks of intense training from their peers. The initiation process is steeped in tradition and is used to train new Chiefs, share experience and build teamwork in the worlds largest fraternity. These non-commissioned officers endure a transition period that sets them apart from the sister services where by they learn to face adversity and challenges together as a team and reinforce the Navy core values of Honor Courage and Commitment.
